Course Description
Welcome to the start of a new and exciting school year! This year, students will be studying mathematics with a problem centered approach. This means students will investigate mathematical ideas within the context of a realistic problem, as opposed to looking only at numbers. Some problems involve real-world applications or unusual situations, while others are purely mathematical. A problem’s context provides a vehicle for understand and remembering the mathematical concepts. We are excited about the curriculum and its potential for helping students develop strong mathematical knowledge and skills. We are looking forward to a successful year for all of our students.
Textbooks:
The GoMAth Texas edition (Textbooks will not be assigned to students.)
Supplies:
1 ½ in. three ring binder. (Students will need to have a 1 ½ binder that is for math and math only.)

Course Expectations:
Grading Plan
Any work not completed during the daily lesson may be sent home for completion. Any work done in class or at home should be placed in the student’s portfolio, which the student should bring to every class, portfolios may be stored in class as well. Portfolios will be checked on a regular basis.
Each student will participate in several individual/small group activities/presentations.

A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
F 69 & below

Course Expectations:
- All student work must be added to the math binder unless otherwise noted by the teacher.
- Students’ math binders should consist of the following items
- Warm-Up, notes, classwork, homework, test and quizzes.
- Grade sheet with five columns: Test, Quiz, Homework, Classwork, Project
- Attendance is necessary to keep up with the class. If a student misses class time, they are missing the instruction time needed to learn a skill. However, if a student must miss class, they are required to make up missed work in a timely manner (PLEASE SEE STUDENT HANDBOOK)
- Students are expected to be in their seat when the tardy bell rings. If not, they will be counted tardy.
- No electronic devices are permitted without Mr. Brown’s approval. If I see it out for ANY reason, it will retrieved. ($15 Fee)
- Students are required to participate in class and be respectful to their peers, themselves, and their teacher. Consequences for misconduct include detention, written assignments, parent notification, and/or office referral.
- Plagiarism and cheating have no place in a community of learners. Each student is required to put forth their personal best. Everyone has something important and valuable to add to our learning experience. If a student is suspected of plagiarism or cheating, the parents and the principal will be notified and consequences will be determined.
